Singapore Gastroenterologist
A gastroscopy is a low-risk, simple and very safe procedure to perform, with most people only reporting very slight discomfort at the back of their throat for a short period of time. Complications can occur, but are very rare.
Results should be out in about 2 weeks from the date which the scope was done.
A colonoscopy, performed by a qualified and experienced gastroenterologist, is a very safe procedure that involves minimal discomfort for the patient. Although there is a risk of perforation and bleeding, it is extremely rare, occurring in 1 in every 1000 cases.
No. The colonoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia. As you will be asleep, you will not experience any pain at all. However, after the procedure, some patients may feel some bloatedness.
It depends on your risk levels for contracting colon cancer, along with any other medical conditions. However, after a polyp-free colonoscopy, most people won’t need another one for the next 5 to 10 years.

Gastroentrology Specialist
A senior consultant gastroenterologist in Singapore with extensive clinical expertise in digestive diseases, endoscopic procedures (gastroscopy, sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, polypectomy, endoscopic variceal ligation and capsule endoscopy), liver diseases, viral hepatitis, fatty liver, liver cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver transplantation.
Prior to entering private practice, Dr Tan was the Director of Clinical Services and a senior consultant of the Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, National University Hospital (NUH), a senior consultant of the Liver Transplant Programme at the National University Centre for Organ Transplantation and the Clinical Lead for the Hepatobiliary Tumor Group at the National University Cancer Institute.
He was also an assistant professor at the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, National University of Singapore and a core faculty member for the Gastroenterology & Hepatology Senior Residency programme at NUH.
Dr Tan graduated from the University of Melbourne in Australia (MBBS) with an honours degree in 2003 and returned to Singapore for his postgraduate training in 2004. He completed his basic specialist training and obtained the Membership of the Royal College of Physicians MRCP (UK), as well as his Master of Medicine (Singapore) in 2007.
Dr Tan received further advanced specialist training in Gastroenterology & Hepatology and was certified by the Specialists Accreditation Board of Singapore in 2011. He further undertook his fellowship and research training in advanced hepatology and transplant hepatology at the Recanati/Miller Transplantation Institute and the Tisch Cancer Institute, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai (New York, USA).
